THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER TIRE PRESSURE

If you can’t remember the last time you inflated your tires, now is the time. Tire pressure is often overlooked and yet essential to safe driving, so you should check the pressure of your tires and reinflate them regularly. Here are our best tips for keeping track of your tire pressure.

Breaking down the numbers

You might be disappointed to learn there’s no such thing as universal tire pressure. The correct pressure depends on the type and brand of tire and is determined by the vehicle manufacturer based on the car’s weight and other characteristics. This information can be found either on your vehicle’s identification label on the driver’s side door, on the fuel tank door or simply in the owner’s manual.

And what about the information on the side of the tires? These are the characteristics of the tires, such as their width and height, maximum load, type of construction and maximum pressure. But be aware their maximum pressure isn’t the recommended pressure. An over-inflated tire has a poor grip on the road, and the tread—the part of the tire that touches the road—wears out much more quickly. On the other hand, an under-inflated tire also reduces road grip and braking performance and accelerates sidewall and rim wear. Whether your tires are over- or under-inflated, their performance won’t be optimal, and your safety will be compromised.

Proper tire pressure is essential for optimal handling and comfort, increasing tire life and reducing fuel consumption. Just a few more reasons to check them regularly.

How can I know the pressure of my tires?

First, always check the tire pressure on cold tires; otherwise, the pressure will be incorrect. Then, you have two options, depending on the model and age of your vehicle:

1. Pressure sensors. Some vehicles are equipped with pressure sensors, which display a warning light on your dashboard to indicate when to inflate your tires.

2. Manual check. You can always check your tire pressure manually on your own with a digital or dial gauge. You can buy these tools at gas stations.

No more excuses.

When should you check your tire pressure?

It’s recommended that you check your tire pressure once a month. At least, check it whenever significant temperature changes occur like a heatwave, snowfall or a change of more than five degrees Celsius. Every time the temperature drops by five degrees Celsius, the tires lose 1 PSI. Therefore, you need to be especially careful when winter returns. Tip: Set a reminder on your smartphone for the first of every month.

It’s also a good idea to check the air pressure in your tires before hitting the road for a long trip. Keep an eye on the pressure in your spare tire too.

Proper tire pressure is necessary for safe driving and maintaining optimal handling, grip and comfort while driving. By taking a few minutes every month to check your tire pressure, you could save yourself lots of trouble. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your Auto Mecano technicians.
